Regeneration Works Begin At Għar Lapsi Following Storm Damage

Regeneration works have officially begun at Għar Lapsi after the area suffered significant damage during Storm Harry earlier this year. The storm caused major destruction to the site, affecting access to the beach and damaging the slipway commonly used by local fishermen.
The works are being carried out by the Public Works Department following a public consultation titled “Għar Lapsi – Back to the People.” Feedback from the consultation indicated that the public would like the area to remain simple and preserved as much as possible in its natural state.
The project includes plans to rebuild the staircase leading to another nearby beach known as Għereq Miżun. The total investment for the regeneration project amounts to around €2 million.
In recent weeks, the department has also installed solar powered street lighting poles in the area. The initiative forms part of a wider agreement with 20 local councils across Malta that will see around 400 solar powered lighting poles installed nationwide.
Omar Farrugia said the works demonstrate the government’s commitment to restoring the site and returning it to the public within the planned timeframe.
Meanwhile, Julian Borg highlighted that collaboration between the local council and the Public Works Department has focused on restoring safe access to the area.
Project architect Mario Ellul explained that current works include trenching, clearing debris left by the storm and laying cables to repair the electrical system. Geological studies of the surrounding rock are also being conducted at depths of 10, 12 and 18 metres.
The next phase will focus on rebuilding the ramp that provides access to the beach. Once completed, workers will continue restoration efforts along the coastline, including rebuilding damaged pathways and removing collapsed concrete and sections of the cliff.
