Regeneration Works At Għar Lapsi Ongoing After Storm Harry Damage

Regeneration works at Għar Lapsi are continuing, with several infrastructure projects already completed and further works underway to restore and strengthen the popular coastal area following the extensive damage caused by Storm Harry.
The update was given during a visit by Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli as part of the Government's "100 Days With Your Support" campaign. The Minister outlined the progress made so far and the interventions still planned for the site.
She said the project fulfils a commitment included in the Government's electoral manifesto and aims not only to repair the storm damage but also to provide safer, more accessible and more resilient infrastructure for the future.
Public Works Department architect Mario Ellul explained that department workers have played a central role in rebuilding the area. They have reshaped the ramp leading to Għar Lapsi Bay, reconstructed the concrete platform using prefabricated blocks and completed the necessary works on the slipway.
Further works by the Department will include completing a new access passage, constructing a jetty for swimmers and building a new staircase to improve public access.
Meanwhile, the contractor is focusing on strengthening coastal protection. Foundations for a new protective wall are at an advanced stage, while large rocks displaced during the storm have been repositioned using barges and heavy machinery.
These rocks will act as a natural barrier against waves, providing additional protection for the new infrastructure.
Works are also underway to restore electricity and water services damaged by the storm. The next phase will include completing the sea wall, the jetty and additional coastal protection works to further safeguard the area.
