In the first half of this year, the Agency for the Regeneration of Tourist Zones carried out regeneration works across 19 localities in Malta, continuing its programme of maintenance, embellishment and upgrading of public spaces.

During the first six months of 2026, the Agency completed works in 14 gardens, recreational spaces and playing fields, strengthening its focus on improving community environments across the country.

These projects form part of a wider effort to enhance everyday public areas used by residents and visitors alike.

The initiative was highlighted during a visit by the Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Alison Zerafa Civelli, to Ġnien iċ-Ċrieki in Żejtun. The site is one of several benefiting from ongoing interventions, with works there now reaching their final stages.

Between January and June 2026, the Agency intensified its operations in a range of localities.

These included Ġnien l-Imtarfa in Mtarfa, Pjazza Meme Scicluna and Misraħ Turu Colombo in Gżira, the Recreational Garden in Ħal Lija, Ġnien iċ-Ċiniżi in Santa Luċija, Ġnien Duminku Mintoff and Ġnien Triq il-Melita in Paola, Ġnien Fleur de Lys in Birkirkara, Ġnien Kunsill Lokali 2000 in Ħal Tarxien, Ġnien Anton Debono in Żebbuġ, Ġnien Bertu and San Tumas in San Pawl il-Baħar, Ġnien l-Indipendenza in Tas-Sliema and Ġnien Joseph A. Stellini in Ħal Balzan.

Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli said the projects demonstrate the Government’s commitment to continued investment in local communities and public spaces. She noted that such initiatives provide families, children and elderly people with safer, cleaner and more attractive environments in which to spend their time.

Agency CEO Dennis Vella said works at Ġnien iċ-Ċrieki are being carried out in collaboration with the Żejtun Local Council and include repairs to walls, tiling, painting, flooring and benches. Żejtun Mayor Joan Agius added that the improvements are part of broader efforts to enhance the quality of open spaces for the community.

Alongside maintenance works, the Agency also provided support services such as transport, as well as the setup and removal of stalls used for social and cultural events. These services were delivered across 33 localities during the same period.

Overall, the figures highlight the scale of activity undertaken between January and May 2026, including the maintenance of 341 benches, 28 lampposts, 27 planters, more than 9,200 metres of urban embellishment features, over 2,100 metres of railings, and 98 additional structures such as signs, mirrors, bollards and bins. In addition, 653 stalls were provided for community events organised by local councils and organisations.
