Within a few weeks, the Public Works Department will begin a regeneration project at Pjazza tal-Ħniena in Qrendi, with an investment of €650,000. This initiative reflects the Government’s ongoing commitment to improving public spaces, safeguarding local cultural heritage, and enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors.

The main objective of this project is to revitalise this historic square, which holds significant importance for the Qrendi community, by improving both its aesthetics and functionality. Through a modern and sustainable design, the square will be transformed into a safer and more accessible public space that can better serve as a central hub for gatherings and social activities. The area is also regularly used by local feast organisations for community events, including traditional fairs that form an important part of village life.

The works will include the installation of new water services to ensure a more efficient and reliable system. Overhead electricity cables currently running along building facades will be relocated underground, improving both safety and the overall visual appearance of the square. In addition, a stormwater catchment system will be introduced to collect rainwater and channel it into the existing drainage system that directs water towards nearby agricultural fields, supporting more sustainable use of natural resources.

Structural works will include the construction of a high quality concrete base, on which durable paving will be laid. The selected materials have been chosen for their longevity as well as their aesthetic value. This will be complemented by lava and porfido edging, which will enhance the traditional character of the locality while adding a refined finish to the public space.

Modern and energy efficient architectural lighting will also be installed to highlight the historical features of the square, particularly during evening hours. This will improve both ambience and safety for the public.

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia said it is the Government’s duty to fully regenerate the square and improve its appearance for the benefit of the community.

Qrendi Mayor David Schembri noted the importance of the project from the perspective of religious tourism, as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy attracts both local visitors and tourists.

Also present were Architect Nadia Gatt Curmi, Martin Formosa on behalf of the Santa Marija Society of Qrendi, and Mannie Galea on behalf of the Lourdes Philharmonic Society of Qrendi.

This investment represents a significant step in the continued development of Qrendi and reflects a clear vision for modern, sustainable public spaces that respect heritage while meeting present and future needs.
