Public spaces in Gozo are set to be further improved with the launch of a regeneration project at Madonna ta’ Loreto Square in Għajnsielem.

Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri announced that works will begin with the aim of enhancing the urban environment, improving comfort for the public, and strengthening the overall appearance of the locality. The project, funded by the Ministry for Gozo and Planning, will be carried out in collaboration with the Għajnsielem Local Council and the local parish.

Minister Camilleri explained that village squares remain central meeting places within communities. He said the project forms part of the wider strategy for Gozo as an island of villages, as well as Malta’s Vision 2050, focusing on creating modern, accessible, and high quality public spaces that are functional, safe, and sustainable.

Initial works will include site preparation, permits, and technical studies to ensure proper planning and execution. Existing elements in poor condition will be removed, followed by excavation and groundwork, including upgrades to underground services.

The square will be redeveloped with new paving using natural materials, improved accessibility, and the installation of urban furniture such as benches and bollards. A modern bus shelter, upgraded lighting systems, CCTV for added security, and a water feature will also be included.

Environmental improvements will feature planting and landscaping supported by irrigation systems. Final works will include testing to ensure the square is fully operational and ready for public use.
