Rediscovering The Maltese Muxrabija

Local
The Department of Information recently highlighted one of Malta’s most distinctive architectural features: the muxrabija (from the Arabic mashrabiya).
Also known locally as in-nemmiesa, ix-xerriefa, and in Gozo as il-kixxiefa, these beautifully carved timber and stone screens have been part of Malta’s architectural landscape since the 14th century.
Originally inspired by Arabic mashrabiya, the muxrabija was designed to allow natural air circulation while maintaining privacy. These intricate screens kept interiors cool and enabled residents to observe the street without being seen, reflecting a blend of practicality and artistry that endures in Maltese culture today.
Have you ever seen one?
