The number of medical operations carried out at Mater Dei Hospital has reached record levels, supported by new investment in robotic surgery and public–private collaboration agreements.

Figures for 2025 show a significant rise in several major procedures. Knee replacements increased to 890, compared with 390 in 2024, while endoscopy procedures exceeded 13,000, an increase of almost 2,400 over the previous year.

The use of robotic surgical systems has been credited with reducing complication rates and shortening recovery times.

Investment in advanced procedures, such as Capsule Endoscopy, has also expanded the range of treatments available.

The method, which uses a small capsule to capture internal images without pain or anaesthesia, has been introduced as part of efforts to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient comfort.

In the past year, the government allocated €14 million to strengthen collaboration between public hospitals and the private sector.

The initiative has reduced waiting times for various procedures, including orthopaedic, hernia and radiological interventions such as CT and MRI scans, a statement details.

Health capital investment is set to increase further in the upcoming Budget, reaching €107 million, a rise of 4% over 2024. Planned projects include a 300-bed extension at San Vinċenz de Paul, a new mental health hospital, and an expansion of the Emergency Department at Mater Dei.

Officials said the combined investments aim to increase surgical capacity, modernise facilities and improve access to care across Malta and Gozo.
