Rare Snake Rescued After Getting Trapped In Well In Pietà

Rare Snake Rescued After Getting Trapped In Well In Pietà
Local

A rather unusual rescue took place in Pietà last week after one of Malta's rarest snakes found itself trapped inside a well.

The Nature Trust Malta Wildlife Rescue Team was called to the scene after an Algerian whip snake was discovered in the unfortunate predicament.

What made the rescue particularly special was the species itself. The Algerian whip snake is considered the rarest of Malta's four native snake species, making sightings of the reptile relatively uncommon.

Thankfully, trained volunteers successfully rescued the snake and brought it to safety.

Nature Trust Malta used the opportunity to remind the public that snakes, despite often being misunderstood or feared, play an important role in maintaining the balance of Malta's ecosystems.

The organisation also stressed that Malta's native snakes are protected by law and must not be harmed or kept as pets.

Anyone who encounters a wild animal that is injured, trapped or in danger is encouraged to contact the Wildlife Rescue Team on 99999505, rather than attempting a rescue themselves.
