Rare Highly Invasive Jellyfish Spotted In Maltese Waters

A highly invasive and stining jellyfish species indigenous to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, has been spotted once again in Maltese waters.
The nomadic jellyfish (Rhopilema nomadica) was recently observed off the northern coast of Malta by Gordon Scott. The sighting was shared by marine biologist Alan Deidun, who posted both details of the encounter and a video on his Facebook page.
The species, which is tropical in origin, is known for forming massive blooms in the eastern Mediterranean. While it has so far only appeared as isolated individuals around Malta, experts note that sightings are becoming increasingly frequent.
The nomadic jellyfish was first officially recorded in Maltese waters in 2014 by the late and much-loved marine enthusiast Shaun Arrigo through the Spot the Jellyfish campaign. Its growing presence has since been closely monitored due to its highly invasive nature and painful sting.
