Rare Diamondback Squid Egg Mass Spotted In Gozo

A rare mass of eggs belonging to the diamondback squid have been spotted close to a ladder in Mġarr ix-Xini, Gozo.

The image, snapped by Emma Mallia and Noel Gauci, shows the egg mass of the species known as “klamar tat-tikek.”

Local marine biologist Aaron Deidun shared the image on social media, explaining that this species is quite rare, and can often be found at depths of around 650m.

He proceeded to share that they are fast-growing, usually reaching up to 1m within their 1 year lifespan.
