Rangers Share Video Of Illegal Trapping Of Protected Bird

The Malta Ranger Unit shared a video of illegal trapping of a protected European Roller during the closed season.
The video was shot during a monitoring of the Natura 2000 site around Ġnejna, where a very evident electronic caller for European Roller was heard.
‘With this bird species being highly protected, they started to scan the area whilst also calling the Environmental Protection Unit Police.’
The person was reportedly quickly located, and he began removing his mist nets and switched off his caller minutes after the police entered Mġarr.
‘This is a very common issue for Environmental Enforcement. The criminals have spotters who have one task only – to be on the lookout for anyone that may intervene with their ongoing crime against nature.’
‘The individual was reported to the EPU Police, and we will increase our monitoring of the site which is very prone to this type of environmental crime’, wrote the MRU. ‘This is NOT Conservation. THIS is Environmental Crime.’
