Random Drink & Drug Tests Are True Deterrents, Says Doctor

Emergency doctor Jonathan Joslin has called on Prime Minister Robert Abela to ensure that stronger penalties for drink and drug driving are matched with random roadside testing, which he describes as the only true deterrent.

The Prime Minister recently announced that government will revise penalties for those who drive under the influence, insisting that tougher measures will soon be implemented.

Dr Joslin welcomed the acknowledgement that harsher sanctions are necessary but argued that fines and court convictions alone will not reduce deaths and serious injuries on Malta’s roads.

Recent tragedies have highlighted the urgent need for reform. Emergency physicians, the Nationalist Party, the Insurance Association Malta, the Association of Catering Establishments and Magistrate Joe Mifsud have all urged government to act decisively.

While increased police presence and educational campaigns are positive steps, Dr Joslin emphasised that prevention, not reaction, must be the guiding principle.

According to Dr Joslin, random roadside testing ensures that every motorist understands that being caught is not dependent on the aftermath of a collision.

It sends a clear message that any driver, at any time, can be stopped and tested, with serious legal consequences for those found guilty.

The Prime Minister’s reform, he concluded, must enshrine random roadside alcohol and drug testing as the central tool of deterrence.

Only then will Malta demonstrate its commitment to protecting lives and delivering justice for victims of reckless driving, he said.
