Rainy Season Has Officially Started
Environment

The rainy season has officially started as we start the month of September.

The 1st of September doesn’t just mean the start of meteorological autumn, but the start of the rainy season.

Looking back at the 2024 to 2025 season, Malta and Gozo recorded an average of 493 millimetres of rain, which is around 88 per cent of the annual norm of 560 millimetres.

Rainfall was unevenly distributed, with Ħaż-Żebbuġ in Malta recording the highest total at 650 millimetres, while Għarb in Gozo followed with 513 millimetres.

On the other hand, Valletta and Nadur experienced the lowest levels with 380 and 377 millimetres respectively.

February 2025 emerged as the wettest month, delivering an average of 98 millimetres, while July 2025 was completely dry, registering no measurable rainfall at all.

Some months stood out as particularly unusual. March 2025, for example, reached 198 per cent of the expected rainfall, while May recorded 350 per cent of the monthly average despite normally being relatively dry.

Over the twelve months, five months saw rainfall above average, six fell below, and one matched the seasonal norm exactly in September 2024.

These variations illustrate the unpredictability of rainfall patterns and underline the importance of monitoring trends as the new rainy season begins.
