Rain Season Is Officially Here As We Kick Off September

A new rainfall season has officially begun as we start September, which also marks the start of meteorological autumn.

However, we will still have to power through some very hot temperatures as the Meteorological Office shows no sign of the heat going away any time soon. It will however be relatively cooler compared to the past few weeks, with temperatures feeling like 36 to 37°C throughout the week.

According to figures by It-Temp Madwarna, the 2025/26 season shows that Malta recorded an average of 483mm of rainfall, equivalent to 86% of the long-term annual average of 560mm.

Ħaż-Żebbuġ was the wettest locality in Malta, receiving 629mm of rain, while Għarb topped the list in Gozo with 527mm. Valletta was the driest locality in Malta with 313mm, while Xagħra recorded the lowest total in Gozo at 431mm.

January 2026 was the wettest month of the season, with an average of 129mm of rainfall, or 145% of the monthly average. In contrast, August 2026 recorded no rainfall at all, making it the driest month of the season.

Monthly figures indicate that only December, January and March received above average rainfall.

The remaining nine months were all drier than normal, with June recording only a trace of rain, July receiving just 0.1mm, and August remaining completely dry.
