Putting Up Fuel & Licence Prices Is Not The Way We Should Tackle Traffic – Transport Minister Hits Back At PN

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works Chris Bonett has reiterated that addressing Malta’s traffic challenges cannot come at the expense of ordinary families.

“The easiest way to tackle traffic is to make everything sky-high: petrol and diesel, vehicle registration, parking fees, and then hike car and driving licence costs,” Bonett said. “From the very beginning, I have been crystal clear that under no circumstances will we pass these burdens onto the public.”

Minister Bonnettcontrasted his approach with that of the newly appointed CEO of the Nationalist Party, suggesting that their proposals such as limiting the number of cars per household and increasing family expenses would unfairly penalise citizens.

“The problem isn’t the people; it’s the approach,” Bonett continued. “You still need to drive your car, but punishing people or increasing costs won’t get them on board. Offering sustainable alternatives will.”

He highlighted several initiatives aimed at promoting greener and more efficient transport. These include the expansion of Park & Ride facilities, the introduction of the Tallinja bil-Baħar ferry service, and plans for an integrated public transport network. “These measures are designed to make sustainable transport a practical choice for everyone,” Bonett said, emphasising that incentives, not penalties, are key to changing travel habits.

Minister Bonnett also criticised the Opposition’s recent parliamentary remarks on traffic management, pointing out that their leadership demonstrated little personal experience with congestion despite claiming otherwise.

Minister Bonnett added, “The wolf may change its coat, but not its nature.”
