A section of Wied Qirda in Ħaż-Żebbuġ has been transformed into a thriving natural habitat, with native virgi trees now covered in purple blossoms that are attracting butterflies and bees.

In a statement, the Ħaż-Żebbuġ Local Council said the trees have successfully established themselves after four years of care and no longer require irrigation.

The council described the project as a significant environmental achievement, noting that the area was previously overrun by invasive alien species. Thanks to ongoing restoration efforts, biodiversity has now recovered, creating a healthier ecosystem for local wildlife and pollinators.

The council also paid tribute to the volunteers who supported the initiative over the years, thanking them for their dedication and hard work. The restoration forms part of wider efforts to protect and enhance Malta's natural environment through the planting of indigenous species and the rehabilitation of ecologically important areas.
