Public Invited To Explore Fort Bengħisa Ahead Of Rehabilitation Works

Heritage Malta is opening the gates of Fort Bengħisa to the public for a special open day on Saturday, 23rd May. This event offers visitors a first opportunity to explore the fort following its recent transfer into the agency’s care, before it undergoes restoration works aimed at making it sustainably accessible to the public.

The fort will open between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Visitors will be able to explore at their own pace or join one of the hourly guided tours alternating between Maltese and English, on a first-come, first-served basis. Through these tours, the public will be able to appreciate the site in its current state while gaining a better understanding of the fort’s scale, layout, and historical significance. Afterwards, the fort will close once more to start its arduous journey towards a brighter chapter of improved accessibility and long-term preservation.

Located in Birżebbuġa, Fort Bengħisa holds particular significance as the last Victorian-style fortification constructed in the Maltese Islands, built between 1900 and 1902. Despite its relatively simple design, the fort remains the largest of its kind locally by area, covering around 45,000 square metres.

From the original plans to build only a gun battery guarding Marsaxlokk Harbour, through shifting military strategies during the Second World War, to its eventual decommissioning in the mid-20th century, the site reflects broader shifts in Malta’s coastal defence history. After decades of curtailed public access, this historic space is now set to regain the dignity it deserves, with its restoration aimed at returning it to the community’s benefit.

Admission to the open day is free, and no booking is required. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable, closed footwear – preferably sturdy walking shoes – due to uneven ground conditions in parts of the site. Light clothing and hats are also recommended. Water, light refreshments, and a selection of merchandise will be available for purchase on site.

The site is not wheelchair accessible and is not suitable for pushchairs. Children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times. Visitors are advised to exercise caution, follow all safety signage, and refrain from entering any areas marked as unsafe or restricted.
