A public consultation on the future use of the former oil storage facility at San Luċjan in the Qajjenza area of Birżebbuġa has officially opened today, marking a key step in plans to regenerate the site into a sustainable, community-focused space.

The announcement was made by Clint Camilleri, Minister for Gozo and Planning, and Miriam Dalli, Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness.

The consultation coincides with the publication of planning objectives and the launch of a partial review of the local plan by the Planning Authority, alongside the drafting of a Development Brief.

The initiative, known as “is-Siċċa”, aims to align with national strategies to strengthen Malta’s blue and green economy while expanding public open spaces.

“This is another step forward in our plan to transform an industrial space into a sustainable and modern site that promotes innovation, the environment, and the community,” said Minister Dalli, “We want our vision for this place to be built on foundations shaped through consultation and careful planning.”

She added that nine of the twelve storage tanks have already been cleaned, with waste materials being prepared for export in line with EU regulations.

The project envisions turning unused tanks into recreational and green areas, with improved accessibility, cultural activities, and sustainable investment opportunities forming part of the long-term plan.
