Protected Species Saved From Being Killed By Stray Cat In Marsaskala

During a routine patrol in Marsaskala, Rangers from the Malta Ranger Unit (MRU) came across a cat playing with something unusual. Upon closer inspection, it was discovered to be a Spanish sparrow a protected species in Malta.
Malta ranger unit said, “Unfortunately feral cats are having a negative impact on biodiversity due to the instinct to catch wildlife, although they are nowadays a domestic species and not wild. This is not only an issue in Malta but also worldwide.”
They added that the MRU, just like the NGOs and individuals that care for cat colonies, urges the MaltaGov to further invest in solutions to not allow feral cats to increase in numbers.
The Spanish sparrow was handed over to BirdLife Malta And will go through rehabilitation and hopefully make a full recover.
