The investment of €1 million has been allocated for the year 2025, with the first call awarding a grant of €800,000 to a total of 83 applicants to support the Maltese traditional feasts.

With a second call for applicants to be launched in August.

In its second year, the scheme has been a success according to the large amounts to applicants from last year. Therefore an additional €300,000 was added to the fund from the €700,000 originally allocated marking a significant 43% increase.

Minister Bonnici said in a press conference, “Year after year, we continue to increase our investment in these community-driven initiatives, thereby fulfilling our electoral promise to protect our cultural identity. We are doing this through solid and tangible investments that help these creative sectors flourish sustainably. Traditions such as festas, which are protected by UNESCO, form part of our intangible cultural heritage, as does fireworks, which are an intrinsic part of our cultural fabric. We are committed to ensuring that these traditions have the necessary resources to grow.”

Chief Operating Officer (Finance & Strategy) of the Malta Arts Council, Mary Ann Cauchi said, “Our journey to strengthen Malta’s cultural heritage and resources continues in line with the principles established in Strategy 2025, the country’s cultural strategy. These types of initiatives have made it possible for us to offer continuous and sustainable support while allowing us to improve accessibility to traditional events so that they can be enjoyed by every member of the community.”
