Progress On New Naxxar School Set To Welcome Around 1,000 New Students
Construction works on the new Naxxar primary school are progressing as the €22 million project moves towards creating a modern educational facility for around 1,000 children.
The new school is being designed to provide an inclusive learning environment equipped with facilities that support education, creativity, sport and the overall development of students. The project is set to deliver 46 classrooms and a range of spaces tailored to the needs of today’s education system.
Education and Sport Minister Byron Camilleri and Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection Keith Azzopardi Tanti visited the site together with representatives from the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools (FTS), which is overseeing the project. The development is being co-financed by the European Union.
The school will cover around 13,000 square metres and will include 20 kindergarten classrooms alongside other educational spaces. These will include areas dedicated to art, music and drama, sports and recreational facilities, a multi-sensory room, a library and a multi-purpose hall.
Around 3,000 square metres of the site will be dedicated to outdoor activities.
During the visit, Minister Camilleri said the project forms part of continued investment in educational infrastructure aimed at creating quality learning environments that respond to the different needs of students.
He said that modern schools should offer more than traditional classrooms, providing children with spaces where they can learn, explore, develop creativity, practise sport and discover their talents.
Minister Azzopardi Tanti said education remains a key pillar for Malta’s economic and social development. He said national and European funds are being used to strengthen the sector through projects such as the rebuilding of the Naxxar primary school.
The FTS is also working to preserve elements of the site’s architectural and archaeological heritage. Three façades from the previous school building, which reflect post-Second World War Modernist architecture, are being retained and integrated into the design of the new school.
The project also resulted in the discovery of archaeological remains, including a Punic tomb, a medieval cistern and a Second World War shelter. These discoveries are being preserved in collaboration with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, while ensuring the planned facilities for the school remain unchanged.
Following the demolition of the old building, excavation and foundation works have been completed, while construction has started on the school hall.
The new facility will include modern services, security systems, connectivity infrastructure, inclusive learning furniture and energy efficiency measures, including photovoltaic panels. The library will also be available to the wider community outside school hours.
