For the second consecutive year, a month-long programme of activities has been launched to further raise awareness of mental health protection. The launch was attended by Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, and the Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela.

The programme, held under the patronage of the President of Malta, aims to continue reducing the stigma associated with mental health. Activities will include discussion sessions, symposia, and art exhibitions. The events will begin tomorrow, 10 September, on World Suicide Prevention Day, and will continue until 10 October, marking World Mental Health Day.

In her speech at the occasion, President Myriam Spiteri Debono explained that the launch was held under her patronage because the Presidency is committed to ensuring that the public receives the necessary information to also take care of their mental health, while continuing the fight against stigma.

President Spiteri Debono emphasised that mental health issues can be addressed, and that proper care can lead to recovery. She encouraged anyone in need to seek immediate help and highlighted the helpline 1579 for those facing mental health challenges.

Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela stated, “For this Government, mental health protection is a national priority. We believe in a holistic approach to healthcare, and the first step in breaking stigma is to integrate mental health care with physical health care. Patients facing physical health challenges often also experience mental health difficulties.”

He added, “We are committed to ensuring that no one is left alone. In this regard, we need the collaboration of all sectors of society so that together we can continue to address mental health challenges.”
