Programme Of Activities Announced For Feast Of St Gregory

Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici has officially launched the programme of activities for the traditional Feast of St Gregory, a long standing event in Malta’s cultural calendar.
The feast dates back to the 16th century and, in its current form, was established in 1781 following a decree by Bishop Vincenzo Labini. It is held on the first Wednesday after Easter and is also traditionally linked with the first sea swim of the season.
During the launch, Minister Bonnici said the Government remains committed to strengthening Malta’s cultural identity, particularly through collaboration with local councils. He noted that initiatives such as this help bring intangible heritage closer to the public, especially younger generations, through a mix of cultural, musical, and educational activities.
Clifford Galea, Assistant Director within the Culture Directorate, highlighted the importance of preserving traditions while ensuring they remain accessible and relevant to the wider community.
The programme includes a cultural evening organised by Wirt iż-Żejtun, featuring “Memories and Reflections with Charles Flores”, sacred harp music by Dr Lydia Buttigieg, and traditional għana by Żeppi Spagnol.
An infiorata and traditional salt plate art will also be prepared overnight in the church square for the public to enjoy. On 8 April, celebrations will begin with a symbolic walk from Bir Miftuħ in Gudja to Żejtun.
Other activities include exhibitions, guided tours for children, competitions, falconry displays, traditional singing, and a presentation of Maltese ftira.
