Professor Frank Bezzina elected 82nd Rector of the University of Malta

Professor Frank Bezzina has been chosen as the 82nd Rector of the University of Malta following a unanimous decision taken during a Council meeting on the 26th March 2026.
As the only candidate put forward, Prof. Bezzina received nominations from 15 Council members representing a wide cross-section of the University community, including Senate, students, academics, and administrative staff.
He is set to begin his five-year term on the 1st of July 2026, taking over from Alfred J. Vella, who has led the institution since 2016.
Presenting his vision under the theme “Knowledge for the common good,” Prof. Bezzina described the University as a proactive force in shaping Malta’s future, working closely with various sectors while maintaining academic independence.
He stressed the need for excellence in teaching and research, supported by strong quality standards, as well as long-term planning, inclusivity, and sustainable investment to drive continued progress.
