Professor and marine biologist Alan Deidun captured exceptionally strong water flow through a major floodwater drainage channel in Marsa following the heavy rainfall that swept across Malta on Saturday morning.

The footage showed powerful, fast-moving water rushing through the channel, which crosses the Marsa Sports Complex site near Triq Aldo Moro. The channel plays an important role in Malta’s stormwater drainage system, diverting rainwater from surrounding valleys towards the Grand Harbour area.

Saturday morning’s downpour was accompanied by widespread thunderstorms, with numerous lightning strikes detected across the Maltese Islands.

Popular Facebook weather page Maltese Islands Weather reported significant lightning activity at around 7:34am, particularly across northern and central Malta, including Mellieħa, St Paul’s Bay, Mosta, Mġarr and Rabat.

Meanwhile, weather page Aġġornament tat-Temp reported that parts of central Malta received more than 20mm of rainfall, with several areas experiencing flooding and significant water accumulation.

The intense rainfall highlighted the importance of stormwater drainage infrastructure, particularly during heavy downpours when large volumes of water flow through Malta’s valleys and waterways within a short period.

The Malta Meteorological Office also forecast further isolated showers and strengthening northwesterly winds throughout Saturday, with Sunday expected to remain partly cloudy but windy.

Temperatures were expected to reach 25°C on Saturday and 26°C on Sunday.
