Prime Minister Visits Students At Junior College
Local

During a visit this morning to the Junior College, Prime Minister and Labour Party Leader Robert Abela discussed a range of measures aimed at young people and students, as outlined in the Labour Party’s Int Malta electoral manifesto.

The proposals are designed to strengthen skills development, improve opportunities, and support young people as they enter education and employment.

Accompanying the Prime Minister were Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg, alongside candidates Samantha Pace Gasan and Georvin Bugeja.

Abela said that a renewed Labour Government would increase student stipends by 15 percent and introduce measures to ensure that work based learning is formally recognised in Malta’s employment legislation.

This would guarantee fair compensation for students undertaking internships and traineeships.

He also announced that young people will not pay income tax on the first €30,000 earned annually during their first three years in employment, or if they establish a start up.

Additional proposals include a €1,000 Erasmus grant for participating students and the covering of initial costs for Master’s and Doctorate scholarships for students who cannot afford upfront fees before receiving government support.

Other initiatives include a mentorship programme with local entrepreneurs, a strengthened Youth Volunteer Scheme for international volunteering opportunities, and the introduction of Individual Learning Accounts.

Under this scheme, the Government would contribute €500 per year for ten years for each child, creating funds of up to €5,000 for accredited courses and training.

Further measures include free legal assistance and fee exemptions for start ups in their first five years, increased incentives for alternative transport use, and a €200 annual Arts Pass for young people aged 18 to 21 to attend cultural events.
