Prime Minister Visits Police Force’s Rapid & Special Intervention Units

Prime Minister Robert Abela visited the Rapid Intervention Unit (RIU) and Special Intervention Unit (SIU) at Ta’ Kandja, where he was briefed on the specialised work carried out by the two sections within the Police Force.

During the visit, accompanied by Minister for Home Affairs and Security Glenn Bedingfield and Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà, Abela said the Government remains committed to implementing an electoral manifesto measure aimed at supporting the health and wellbeing of officers serving in the disciplined forces.

The Prime Minister said the Government recognises the particular challenges faced by officers while carrying out their duties and intends to provide health insurance for all members of the disciplined forces during the current legislature.

He said the measure would give officers wider access to the healthcare services they require.

Abela also visited the training facilities and operational vehicle fleet used by both units, where he was shown the practical exercises carried out in specialised environments, including scenarios involving access to buildings in high-risk situations.

He thanked RIU and SIU officers for their dedication, professionalism and courage in protecting the Maltese and Gozitan communities.

The Prime Minister said investment in the Police Force would continue through resources, training and technological equipment. The RIU, which operates around the clock, responds to emergencies including domestic violence cases, traffic accidents, thefts, fires and incidents involving weapons.

The unit has recently been strengthened through new specialised vehicles and uniforms, while the SIU continues to provide tactical responses to high-risk situations, including hostage cases, armed individuals, terrorist threats and drug trafficking operations.
