Prime Minister Robert Abela dismissed PN leader Alex Borg’s proposal to create what Borg described as “a petrol station in the middle of the Mediterranean”, saying the project’s promise of 150 new jobs pales in comparison to the employment growth achieved under a Labour government. Abela stated that around 160 new jobs are being created every four days under the current administration.

Speaking during a press conference, Abela questioned whether there was a “hidden investor” behind the offshore fuel hub proposal and claimed the project’s figures were misleading. He also alleged that the proposal may be linked to an individual involved in oil smuggling activities, adding that the same idea had previously been presented to him personally and was rejected due to concerns over its feasibility and timeframe.

In response, PN Shadow Minister for Energy Ivan Castillo defended the proposal, saying it had also received backing from the chairman of the Malta Maritime Forum.

During the same address, Abela also announced a number of business-focused proposals aimed at supporting young entrepreneurs and startups. These included expanding the Intrapriża 16 scheme to help youths aged between 16 and 18 launch their first business with mentorship from local entrepreneurs, as well as offering free legal assistance and waiving Malta Business Registry fees for startups during their first five years.

The Prime Minister also unveiled plans for a new National Business Wallet, a digital platform intended to store licences, permits, and official documents securely while reducing bureaucracy and speeding up administrative processes for businesses.
