Prime Minister Robert Abela’s Flight Struggles to Land Amid Strong Winds

A flight from Brussels carrying Prime Minister Robert Abela faced difficulty landing at Malta International Airport on Thursday night due to strong west-northwest winds sweeping the island.
According to the Times of Malta, the aircraft circled for approximately 45 minutes before successfully touching down on its third attempt at Luqa.
Police and the Civil Protection Department Malta confirmed that no injuries were reported, though emergency crews had a busy night clearing fallen trees and hazardous billboards from streets.
The Met Office downgraded its red weather warning to orange on Friday morning, noting that very strong winds, occasionally reaching gale force, would continue in exposed areas until 1pm. Winds are expected to ease slightly on Saturday before picking up again on Sunday, reaching force seven, with temperatures ranging between 11°C and 16°C.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution, avoid working at heights, stay away from shorelines, and secure loose outdoor objects. Drivers are also advised to take care, particularly in exposed areas where sudden crosswinds may occur.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges posed by Malta’s current spell of severe winds.
