Prime Minister Robert Abela Nominates Carmelo Abela for Parliament Speaker

Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that he will be proposing elected Labour MP Carmelo Abela as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives when Parliament reconvenes.
Taking to Facebook, Robert Abela stated “On Saturday, when we open Parliament, I will be proposing Carmelo Abela as Speaker of the Parliament. His long experience in Parliament, his rectitude and integrity make him a suitable person to occupy such an important role leading the highest institution in our country. On my behalf and on behalf of the Government I lead, I wish him further work for the good of Malta. “
Abela also took the time to thank outgoing parliamentary speaker Dr Anġlu Farrugia for his time and dedication as speaker throughout the past years.
Carmelo Abela previously served as Minister for Home Affairs and National Security between 2014 and 2017, before going on to serve as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2017 to 2020.
With extensive ministerial experience, decades in Parliament, and a previous role as Deputy Speaker, Abela is now being put forward as a leading candidate for the role of Speaker as the Labour Party prepares to begin a new legislature.
The Labour Party also released a statement congratulating Carmelo Abela on his appointment as Speaker of the House of Representatives and thanking Dr Anġlu Farrugia for his years of service.
Carmelo Abela’s resignation as an MP will trigger a casual election in District 3, from which he was elected. Should no Labour Party candidates contest the seat, a co-option process may be carried out by the Prime Minister in line with parliamentary procedure.
