Prime Minister Robert Abela has defended Labour Party candidate Omar Rababah after he was subjected to a series of racist and discriminatory comments online following his decision to contest the general election.

The Prime Minister’s stance comes amid widespread condemnation of the attacks, which have been described by various political actors as unacceptable and contrary to democratic values. Rababah, who is contesting the election with the Labour Party, has received messages of support from across the political spectrum.

Smaller political parties have also issued statements in solidarity. ADPD – The Green Party condemned the racist remarks and warned that diversity is a cornerstone of a strong democracy. The party stressed that “racism kills,” referring to past cases of violence, and urged political leaders to take a firm stance against hate speech.

Meanwhile, Momentum also expressed solidarity with Rababah, stating that citizenship, not origin or religion, is the only requirement to contest elections in a democratic system. It called for respect, tolerance, and equal political rights for all citizens.

Momentum leader Arnold Cassola added that all candidates have the right to participate in elections freely and without discrimination, emphasising that democracy must protect political and religious liberty regardless of background.
