Prime Minister Reaffirms Commitment To Support Families Through Challenges

Prime Minister and Labour Party Leader Robert Abela has reaffirmed that a Labour Government will continue supporting Maltese and Gozitan families through challenges that may arise internationally, while highlighting what he described as the Government’s record of economic and social measures.
Addressing a political activity in Marsaxlokk, Dr Abela said Labour Governments had transformed Malta into a success story by supporting families during difficult periods, including maintaining subsidies, introducing tax reductions and delivering the Super Bonus. He contrasted this with previous Nationalist administrations, which he claimed had placed greater burdens on the public during times of crisis.
The Prime Minister said that, under a Labour Government, subsidies would continue, pensions would keep increasing, thousands of widows would receive a full pension and more women would become eligible for pensions through the transfer of social security contributions. He also highlighted ongoing tax reductions for parents.
Dr Abela described the latest Budget as a record investment in social measures, with the largest capital expenditure allocation to date. He said it would also support developments in artificial intelligence, education, healthcare, electricity infrastructure, green projects, IVF access, first-time buyer support and improved sea transport services.
The Prime Minister criticised the Nationalist Party over its financial management and its failure to publish a Pre-Budget Document, while also questioning disagreements within the party over subsidies on fuel, electricity and water prices.
Dr Abela said Malta’s economic growth had provided the resources needed to withstand major external challenges, including the pandemic, wars and rising global inflation. He added that the Government’s next priority would be improving people’s quality of life after previously focusing on achieving economic targets.
Concluding his speech, Dr Abela pledged that the Labour Government would continue working for people at every stage of life and described Labour’s policies as a guarantee of a better future for Malta.
