Prime Minister Robert Abela has spoken out against a proposed 13-storey residential project in Xlendi, Gozo, stating that the area should not be suffocated by unnecessary development.

He stressed that the construction industry must be guided by sustainability and that the Planning Authority has a duty to consider criteria such as established policies and aesthetics when deciding on applications.

The project, recommended for approval by the case officer, foresees 46 apartments, a convenience store, and underground parking across 13 floors.

The unusual recommendation comes from the site’s location between two streets at different elevations, which technically allows the building to comply with height restrictions.

However, several NGOs have objected, arguing the scheme will harm Xlendi’s natural character and place further strain on local infrastructure.

Abela described the project as heavy-handed, saying it risks destroying the area’s natural beauty.

He also remarked on political reactions, noting that the opposition leader had avoided commenting directly on the proposal, while opposition MP Alex Borg made what he called a U-turn following public criticism of high-rise projects in Gozo.

A final decision on the Xlendi application is expected on Wednesday.
