Prime Minister Meets MCESD To Discuss Government’s Priorities For Legislature

Prime Minister Robert Abela has reaffirmed his Government's commitment to social dialogue and long-term reform during a meeting with representatives of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD), outlining the administration's priorities for the next five years.
Abela was joined by Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection Keith Azzopardi Tanti and Minister for Youth, Wellbeing and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme Omar Farrugia.
The meeting focused on the Government's programme for the current legislature and the role of social partners in shaping policy and national development.
Addressing the council, the Prime Minister described the MCESD and its members as a crucial pillar of social dialogue and Malta's continued progress.
He stressed that consultation with social partners would remain a central element of the Government's approach, pointing to the cooperation established in recent years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abela said that collaboration between the Government, employers and workers' representatives had helped safeguard jobs, support families and maintain economic stability during challenging circumstances. He also highlighted joint work on Malta Vision 2050 and various sectoral and collective agreements that have improved conditions for workers.
The Prime Minister said the Government would continue providing certainty and stability, particularly in the energy sector, while maintaining investment in families and businesses.
He noted that Malta's strong economic performance and sound public finances provide a solid foundation for further reforms and investment.
Referring to the Government's broader agenda, Abela described its programme as ambitious and reform-oriented, with a focus on quality of life, healthcare, education, sustainable mobility, environmental protection and digital transformation.
He added that the first 100 days of the legislature would demonstrate the Government's determination to continue implementing necessary reforms while strengthening social dialogue.
Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti said sustainable progress can only be achieved through cooperation, arguing that economic growth must be accompanied by social advancement and investment in skills.
He reiterated the Government's commitment to ensuring that European funding and public policies improve people's quality of life.
MCESD Chairperson Maria Micallef welcomed the meeting, describing it as a clear indication of the importance the Government places on social dialogue.
She emphasised the need to remain focused on implementing the Malta Vision 2050 strategy and achieving its objectives.
Head of the Public Service Tony Sultana and Cabinet Secretary Ryan Spagnol also addressed the meeting, highlighting ongoing work to implement electoral manifesto commitments and achieve the country's wellbeing targets through the Wellbeing Index initiative.
