Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed a commemorative event marking the 30th anniversary of Thermoplastics Ltd in Malta, where he highlighted the company’s work, vision and resilience that have contributed to its success in the manufacturing sector.

In his address, the Prime Minister stated that the manufacturing sector continues to create careers and opportunities for many Maltese and Gozitan workers.

He noted that Malta has achieved an important milestone by recording the highest employment rate in the European Union, attributing this to strategic decisions taken over recent years.

He added that manufacturing has remained competitive, continued to generate jobs, and is expected to further improve in quality. He also acknowledged the efforts of those working within the sector, describing their contribution as essential to the Maltese economy.

Abela referred to the growth of Thermoplastics Ltd beyond Malta, noting its expansion across the Mediterranean region and its establishment of commercial links with major international companies.

He said this demonstrates the potential of Maltese enterprises when supported by clear vision, appropriate investment and strong leadership.

He also referred to Vision Malta 2050, which identifies manufacturing as a key pillar for the country’s long term development. The aim is for Malta to continue producing and exporting goods manufactured locally while strengthening its position internationally.

He explained that this vision is supported by a stable and resilient economy that provides businesses with the certainty required to invest and expand.

The Prime Minister noted that Malta continues to receive positive assessments from international credit rating agencies, as well as institutions such as the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund.

He said these assessments reinforce the Government’s capacity to support businesses, particularly through measures such as electricity subsidies.

He contrasted Malta’s situation with that of other European countries, stating that many factories across Europe are facing uncertainty and, in some cases, operational restrictions.

In Malta, he said, the Government has maintained stable energy prices, allowing businesses to plan with confidence. He added that Malta is the only European country that has kept energy prices stable over the past four years despite global challenges, supported by an investment of around one billion euro aimed at assisting both households and businesses.

Abela also spoke about the Government’s focus on two major transitions within industry, the digital transition and the environmental transition. He noted that Thermoplastics Ltd is already investing in sustainability, including the use of recycled plastic materials.

He explained that the environmental transition presents both challenges and opportunities, while digitalisation offers further scope for manufacturing to evolve. He stressed the importance of continued investment in skills and technology to complement the workforce rather than replace it.

He concluded by thanking the management and employees of Thermoplastics Ltd for their contribution over the past three decades, and reaffirmed that Malta offers a stable environment for continued growth.

Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri also addressed the event. He highlighted the company’s investment in advanced technologies such as automation and 3D printing, describing it as a forward looking approach aligned with future needs.

He said this reflects the type of business model that supports Vision Malta 2050, where innovation and sustainability play a central role in generating quality employment and added value. Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli was also present.

Thermoplastics Ltd employs more than 250 people in Malta and Tunisia, supplying products to local and international clients across the toys, automotive, smart technologies and construction sectors.
