Prime Minister Inaugurates Year-Round Swimming Facility At Birżebbuġa Aquatic Club

Prime Minister Robert Abela has inaugurated a major investment at the Birżebbuġa Aquatic Club, delivering a facility that can now be enjoyed throughout the entire year.
The upgrade includes a new heat pump system and a modern pool cover, ensuring that water temperatures remain suitable in all seasons. As a result, athletes, club members, and local residents will now have continuous access to the pool.
Prime Minister Abela highlighted that this project reflects the Government’s ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality initiatives in the sports sector for the benefit of local communities. He expressed satisfaction at the strong collaboration between the Department of Public Works, SportMalta, the Birżebbuġa Aquatic Club, and the Local Council. Thanks to this joint effort, the south’s only outdoor pool which is now also heated will be made accessible to Birżebbuġa residents on designated days and times. “This makes the project truly community-based, and strengthens social and sporting activity in the locality,” he said.
The Prime Minister also emphasised the financial benefits for the club. Until now, the organisation had to rent other swimming pools during the winter months. The savings generated from this new investment can now be channelled into the club’s development, supporting its operations and long-term sustainability.
This initiative, he added, underscores the Government’s vision to place local communities at the core of its political agenda, while continuing to invest in Birżebbuġa to improve past shortcomings and create a better future for residents.
Dr Abela noted that this project forms part of a wider set of Government initiatives in the locality, including the €12 million regeneration of the Birżebbuġa Promenade. Works on this major upgrade expected to begin early next year will deliver five new open spaces for the community.
Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia remarked that, for the first time, the south of Malta now has a pool that can be used all year round, not just in summer. He described the upgrade as an important new service for Birżebbuġa residents and for people in neighbouring areas who use swimming facilities for therapeutic purposes.

Farrugia added that, in recent months, the Public Works Department, the Local Council, and community organisations have collaborated on several projects aimed at improving quality of life and enhancing safety for residents in and around Birżebbuġa. He confirmed that this commitment will continue, with next year set to bring both the promenade regeneration and the development of new premises for the regatta club—further direct investments in the community.
