PRIME MINISTER INAUGURATES NEW FAST FERRY SERVICE LINKING SLIEMA, BUGIBBA AND GOZO

Prime Minister Robert Abela has officially inaugurated a new fast ferry service connecting Tas-Sliema, Buġibba and Gozo, alongside Ministers Clint Camilleri and Chris Bonett. The service forms part of a wider strategy to strengthen Malta’s maritime transport network.
Abela announced that the route between Sliema and Buġibba will be free of charge, describing it as part of the government’s commitment to maintaining fully free public transport, both on land and at sea. He contrasted this with austerity measures seen elsewhere in Europe, stating that expanding free services reflects Malta’s “progressive” approach.
The new connection allows passengers travelling between Malta and Gozo to stop at additional coastal destinations beyond the existing Valletta and Ċirkewwa routes. The service is also being integrated into the Tallinja network, with further expansion planned, including a future link between Marsaskala and Valletta once infrastructure works are completed.
Abela also highlighted ongoing investment in the Gozo Channel fleet, including plans for more vessels and cleaner technology, as well as the introduction of an air taxi concept between the islands. According to Transport Malta CEO Kurt Farrugia, the initiative is a key step in creating a more modern, integrated transport system under the “Malta in Motion” plan.
The project is expected to be part of a broader long-term strategy aimed at improving connectivity, reducing congestion, and strengthening maritime links across the Maltese islands.
