Prime Minister Robert Abela, together with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg, has inaugurated the new VOCO Hotel in St Julian’s, marking another significant investment in Malta’s tourism industry.

The €40 million project, developed by the Eden Leisure Group as part of the InterContinental Hotels Group, adds a new five-star property to the island’s growing portfolio of luxury accommodation. Featuring 168 contemporary rooms and modern facilities, the hotel reflects continued confidence from the private sector in Malta’s economic stability and long-term tourism potential.

Malta has continued to consolidate its position as a leading international tourism destination. Between January and August 2025, tourist expenditure in Malta rose by 18.2% compared to the same period in 2024, highlighting strong and sustained growth within the sector.

Figures published by Eurostat show that Malta ranked first among European countries in accommodation nights, which increased by nearly 13% during the first half of the year. This expansion has outpaced both the European average and that of many Mediterranean competitors.

Prime Minister Abela noted that these results stem from strategic planning and a consistent commitment to sustainability. He reaffirmed that under the Malta Vision 2050 framework, the government aims to focus on tourism quality rather than volume. He also underlined the importance of close cooperation between the public and private sectors to support responsible growth through improved infrastructure and investment in innovation.

The opening of the VOCO Hotel strengthens Eden Leisure Group’s partnership with IHG Hotels Group and represents the third hotel managed by the international brand in Malta. The development underscores Malta’s growing appeal as a destination that offers premium hospitality, innovation, and a high standard of service for both local and international visitors.
