Prime Minister Hails Signing Of Gas Supply Agreement With Enemalta & BP

Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that Enemalta has signed a new agreement with BP to supply liquefied natural gas to Malta’s power station.
Speaking via a phone link on ONE during the programme Paperscan, Abela referred to what he described as a fear campaign by the Nationalist Party during the election period, which suggested that Malta would not have a gas supply after August.
He said the agreement provides reassurance that, despite volatility in international energy markets, a deal has been reached that ensures a secure and competitive energy supply.
The arrangement followed negotiations between Enemalta and Energy Minister Miriam Dalli.
The Prime Minister said that government work is already underway at Cabinet level and that with the official opening of Parliament, several laws will be introduced immediately to deliver key reforms.
Among these, he highlighted IVF reform, which will give more couples the opportunity to become parents in Malta without needing to travel abroad.
He said the Government has an obligation to provide this service locally and aims to implement the reform within the first 100 days of the legislature.
He also referred to planning reform in the appeals process, stressing the need for balance between appellants and developers, with strict deadlines for decisions on appeals.
Abela further highlighted equality reforms, saying proposed legislation would help Malta regain a leading position in international LGBTIQ+ indices.
On geopolitics, he noted that developments were discussed at the recent European leaders’ meeting in Brussels, adding that upcoming EU budget negotiations for the next seven years will be crucial for Malta’s future planning and investment priorities.
