Prime Minister Robert Abela announced a €20,000 donation from the Social Causes Fund to Id-Dar tal-Providenza during the opening of the 16th edition of the BOV Volleyball Marathon.

He praised the strong spirit of volunteering and solidarity that distinguishes the people of Malta and Gozo, while thanking the athletes, volunteers, staff and management for their dedication.

Abela also referred to the Personal Autonomy Act and the Protection of Vulnerable Adults Act, which came into force on Friday, saying they represent an important step towards a fairer and more inclusive society.

The marathon was officially inaugurated on Thursday by President Myriam Spiteri Debono at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Ta' Qali, where the event is being held for the first time.

Forty players began the demanding challenge of playing volleyball continuously for 53 hours in aid of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, with the marathon ending on Saturday evening.

Addressing those present, the President described the event as a celebration of resilience, endurance and the generosity of the Maltese people

She said Id-Dar tal-Providenza remains a pillar of social welfare, providing support with dignity to those who need it most.

Director Mgr Martin Micallef thanked the players, volunteers, sponsors and supporters, while appealing for continued public generosity. He noted that the Home requires around €8 million each year to sustain its services.

Visitors can enjoy live entertainment, a charity 5K run, a DJ takeover, a children's area, food court and an art exhibition by NGO S.T.A.N.D. The marathon is being broadcast live on the main local television stations.
