Prime Minister & Family Meet Pope Leo XIV At Vatican

Prime Minister Robert Abela, along with his wife Lydia Abela and daughter Giorgia Mae, recently met Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican.

The Pope welcomed the Abelas warmly as they presented him with artisanal gifts from Malta, which he gladly accepted.

During the meeting, the discussion focused on the need for peace in the world, a theme that both sides emphasised. Lydia Abela expressed her hope that the Pope would visit Malta soon, telling him, ‘Everyone is waiting for you,’ to which he replied, ‘I hope so.’

Prime Minister Abela also reflected on the Pope’s past visits to Malta and shared the family’s hope that he would return to meet the Maltese and Gozitan people in his capacity as Pope.

The meeting highlighted the strong personal connection between the Pope and Malta, with the pontiff receiving the Abelas with warmth and open arms, continuing the bond established during Pope Francis’ visit to the islands in 2022.
