Prime Minister Abela Outlines Malta’s Priorities on Migration, Security, and International Cooperation At European Political Community Meeting

During the seventh meeting of the European Political Community in Copenhagen, Denmark, Prime Minister Robert Abela presented Malta’s strong position on the issue of irregular migration.

Irregular migration across Europe was a central topic at the meeting, with European leaders agreeing on the need for a holistic approach to address the challenges it presents, which continue to evolve.
Prime Minister Abela emphasised that, alongside a robust regulatory and operational framework, there is a need to strengthen strategic partnerships and global cooperation on this issue. He stated:
“The challenge before us is not only to reduce the number of irregular arrivals but also to increase the effective return of those who arrive in our territories irregularly and are not eligible for protection. The message must be clear: in our countries, we decide who enters, not the criminal networks operated by human traffickers.”
He also highlighted Malta’s positive results in this sector, noting that they serve as an example for the European Union.
The leaders also discussed Europe’s security situation and how it can be reinforced within the current geopolitical context, including the Russian aggression in Ukraine. This topic was addressed a day earlier during an informal EU summit also held in Copenhagen. Prime Minister Abela stressed the continued importance of supporting Ukraine while maintaining international efforts to negotiate a peace agreement with Ukraine’s active participation. He also reiterated Malta’s full commitment to promoting dialogue and reconciliation, building on the country’s roles in the OSCE and the Council of Europe.
Regarding European defence and security, Dr Abela stated that participation should remain voluntary and flexible, with full respect for the policies of all Member States. He emphasised the various dimensions of security Europe must address to ensure Member States meet expectations and safeguard their citizens’ interests.
Additionally, at the same European Political Community meeting, Prime Minister Abela took part in the launch of the European Coalition Against Drugs, discussing different realities related to this social challenge. He reaffirmed Malta’s commitment to combating criminal networks and drug traffickers and highlighted the importance of enhanced international cooperation to strengthen security controls and border restrictions.
Prime Minister Abela also held a bilateral meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to discuss further cooperation between their countries.
