President Spiteri Debono Hosts Vatican Secretary of State

President Myriam Spiteri Debono hosted Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, for a courtesy meeting at San Anton Palace.

Cardinal Parolin extended greetings on behalf of Pope Leo XIV and spoke positively about the strong and longstanding relationship between Malta and the Vatican. He commended Malta’s contribution within international fora, particularly its advocacy for peace, justice, and respect for the rule of law.

The meeting also addressed pressing global developments, including ongoing conflicts and wider international challenges. Both sides highlighted the importance of dialogue, solidarity, and cooperation, as well as the need to modernise multilateral institutions such as the United Nations.

President Spiteri Debono reiterated Malta’s resolve to continue working towards lasting peace by addressing the underlying causes of conflict and acting responsibly within the international community.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg reaffirmed Malta’s commitment to multilateral engagement, while acknowledging the importance of reform and practical solutions in today’s changing global landscape.
