President Of Malta Visits Maltese Patients Receiving Treatment In London

On Thursday morning, Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, visited Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she met a Maltese child receiving treatment for a serious health condition.
The three-year-old girl has been receiving specialised care in London for around three months and is expected to remain abroad for several more months of treatment.
During the visit, the President spoke with the child’s family, who are currently in London with her parents and young sibling.
In view of this, Her Excellency highlighted the importance of the support provided by organisations such as the Malta Community Chest Fund, not only to patients but also to their relatives, who in many cases spend months away from Malta and have to leave their daily lives behind.
This was also evident during the President’s visit to the residence run by the Franciscan Sisters of the Heart of Jesus, which provides accommodation for Maltese patients and their relatives while they are in London for medical treatment.
There are currently 40 Maltese patients in the United Kingdom who, although they are no longer hospital inpatients, are still unable to return to Malta. This is because, despite being discharged from hospital, they must continue attending medical consultations and undergoing tests, requiring them to remain in the UK.
During her visit to the Franciscan Sisters, in the presence of the Augustinian Sisters who also accommodate Maltese patients in London, the President spent time speaking with patients and their relatives and listening to their experiences.
The President of Malta was accompanied by Health Minister Ian Borg, Malta’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Prof. Stephen Montefort, and officials from the Malta Community Chest Fund.
The President’s visit to London will conclude on Friday, when she will meet Maltese patients receiving treatment at Royal Marsden Sutton Hospital and visit patients staying at Puttinu Cares apartments.
