President Of Malta Opens Up About Losing Husband Earlier This Year

H.E President Myriam Spiteri Debono opened up about the death of her husband, Dr Anthony Spiteri Debono, who sadly passed away on the 24th of July 2025.
“Death affects people in different ways,” she said, “My husband’s death really came out of nowhere, in a short period of time, almost 3 months.”
She explained how as his death neared, she could see him deteriorate. Eventually he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
“I was impressed. I began to understand what people mean when they say you have no idea how he left,” continued President Spiteri Debono, “At the end, every hour I was seeing deterioration in him.”
Through her work with the Malta Community Chest Fund, the President explained how she quickly found herself in the shoes of the people she was helping.
She proceeded to explain how she couldn’t get any help from organisations like L-Istrina because there was nothing left to do for her husband.
“You always do what you have to do,” concluded the President, “You need to do what needs to be done, and you keep going.”
