Pope LEO XIV Welcomes Hollywood Icons For Vatican Meeting

Pope Leo has held a special audience with a group of major Hollywood figures, including Cate Blanchett, Viggo Mortensen and Monica Bellucci, urging them to continue their work as what he called pilgrims of the imagination who help to bring hope.
Speaking beneath the frescoes of the Clementine Hall, the Pope praised cinema for its power to entertain, educate and inspire amazement, while warning of a troubling decline in cinema going worldwide.
The gathering, hailed by Spike Lee as a great day, marked the first event of its kind in the Vatican and signalled Leo XIV’s intention to engage more closely with global culture.
He encouraged filmmakers to confront difficult themes such as violence, poverty, exile, loneliness, addiction and forgotten wars, insisting that good cinema explores pain rather than exploits it.
Six months into his papacy, Leo has often been viewed as quieter and more reserved than his predecessor Francis, making this high profile meeting a notable shift in tone.
Among the attendees were Chris Pine, Gus Van Sant, Giuseppe Tornatore and Gianni Amelio. The Pope also defended the film industry at a time of financial strain and recent strikes, highlighting the quiet dedication of behind the scenes workers and warning that cinemas, which he called the beating heart of communities, must be protected from closure.
After his speech and blessing, he met each guest individually. Blanchett presented him with a woven bracelet in solidarity with displaced people, while Lee gifted a New York Knicks shirt printed with Pope Leo’s name and the number 14.
