Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg has hinted at the possibility of a future papal visit to Malta following a recent visit to Vatican City.

Borg travelled to the Vatican alongside President Myriam Spiteri Debono, where they met Pope Leo XIV. Sharing a photo from the meeting on social media, Borg revealed that the Pope is “eager to accept the invitation of the Maltese people and visit our country.”

Malta was last honoured with a papal visit in 2022, when Pope Francis travelled to the islands. Prior to that, Pope Benedict XVI visited in 2010.

During his long pontificate, Pope John Paul II made two visits to Malta — first in 1990 and again in 2001.

Should Pope Leo XIV accept the invitation, it would mark another historic moment in Malta’s longstanding relationship with the Vatican.
