Local

Police Sergeant Johann Vella has been recognised for his extraordinary courage, dedication and sense of duty following the shooting that left him critically injured earlier this year.

Vella was shot in the face and neck during a police operation in Ta’ Ġiorni in July, after officers responded to reports of a fire and an armed confrontation.

He underwent emergency treatment at the scene before being transferred to Mater Dei Hospital and later spent several weeks recovering in hospital.

Vella was eventually discharged and began his recovery at home.

The recognition described Vella as having demonstrated exceptional bravery as a member of the Malta Police Force, particularly at a moment when the demands of service went beyond the ordinary call of duty.

His recognition forms part of a wider list of individuals being honoured for their service in different fields, including education, social work, public service, community initiatives and the preservation of Malta’s cultural heritage.
