Police Begin Roadside Drug Testing Following New Legal Amendments

Following recent legal amendments passed by Parliament, the Maltese Police Force has started conducting roadside drug tests on drivers as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen road safety across Malta and Gozo.
In the first days of the operation, three drivers involved in collisions tested positive for drug use. Additionally, routine checks uncovered another driver who tested positive while being stopped among 70 vehicles on Triq Tul il-Kosta, Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq last Sunday.
During these inspections, authorities issued 32 fines for various traffic violations, and 11 drivers were caught exceeding the speed limit.
Police confirmed that these drug testing operations will continue regularly at different times of the day and will be maintained throughout the coming weeks.
The initiative aims to deter drug-impaired driving and enhance overall road safety, ensuring that motorists comply with the law and that public streets remain secure for all users.
