PN Warns Government’s 2050 Plan Relies Too Much on Population Growth, Not People’s Needs

In a press release, the Nationalist Party stated that Malta’s Vision for the future must be more ambitious. It should always prioritise the needs of the people and focus on quality rather than quantity. Malta Vision 2050 should not only set long-term goals but also chart a clear course towards a more sustainable and inclusive future, improving the lives of both Maltese and Gozitan communities.

This was the central message conveyed by the PN in response to the Malta Vision 2050 document, which was presented this afternoon to the Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, Silvio Schembri. The meeting had been scheduled well in advance as part of a mutual commitment to collaborate on a vision that truly represents the interests of the entire nation.
The PN delegation was led by Deputy Leader Alex Perici Calascione, who stressed that this vision concerns the future of all Maltese citizens and that reaching a national consensus on the country’s direction is therefore essential. In its response, the PN acknowledged the positive aspects of the Government’s document, identified areas where it falls short, and put forward constructive proposals. The PN reaffirmed its commitment to a constructive dialogue to ensure that the Maltese people can look to the future with confidence and optimism.
Shadow Minister for the Economy and Enterprise Jerome Caruana Cilia noted that, while the Government’s proposed Vision includes several positive elements, the PN believes the strategy could and should be far more ambitious, aiming for Malta to lead in key sectors rather than merely follow others. He emphasised that although Vision 2050 sets out numerous objectives linked to specific targets, the principal focus must be on the quality of outcomes.
Jerome Caruana Cilia said there must be a clearer link between economic growth and real improvements in people’s daily lives. This is key to reducing widening inequalities.

Damien Spiteri, Head of Secretariat of the Leader of the Opposition, was also part of the PN delegation.
